Topic: Veganism and "pets"
Should vegans have/own other sentient beings as "pets" ?

what does the comunity say about this matter?

is it ok to BUY a dog/cat/fish/hamster/parrot or whatever, in a store, then taking it to live with us out of their natural environment?

it goes against vegan principles in my opinion, but what do you think about it? I have met many so called "vegans" who don't seem to be concerned about owning a "pet". Hmm.. kinda controversial, those who have pets can't imagine a life without them. They need more their pets than what their pets need them I think.

So, Vegans + Pets = Ok?

the thing is, if you look for a non-human friend and you're not going to exploit it's talents in any way and provide a nice environment food bed etc for him to live no problem, oh! and stay out of pet shops, go to your local animal shelter they need your help there and you're, many times, saving their lives, unfortunately many dogpounds and others don't have the right conditions and even kill some animals that aren't adopted for a long time. That way you're not contributing to animal traffic and helping a fellow animal.

Good subject Andres! Always contorversial...

I'm against any animal exploration. About "pets" I think that to buy them is wrong. But to pic animals from shelters or from the street to live with us can be the only way to save their lives. I live with a cat because it was abandoned on the street. I only gave him vegetarian cat food (Benevo) and vegan food (homemade)and he is very active and healthy :-)

Please don't buy animals !
Adopt from shelters or give some of your time as volunteer work at the shelters.

I have a doubt about this subject. I'm vegetarian in my way to be vegan and live with my two "street" cats. I don't know what is the right way to feed them, since they are not vegetarian animals. If I just give them vegetables and nuts, they may be unhealthy, aren't they?

All what I eat is organic and I thought that maybe I could buy some organic cats food, but same problem: does organic means "not animal exploitation"?

Hmm, in the past such animals meant company, but also some sort of service to the group, using their more accurate senses to prevent them from possible threats or even helping in the defense and safety of the group. So on, this animals were gradually domesticated and became what we call in our "modern" life, a pet.

Why do I say that? well, simply because it's from the past that we all come, and the past should guide -up to a point- the way we understand and face the present. Back then, those animals came closer to the group since the group also provided them with protection AND .. food. What sort of food was that if the animals we are talking about were basically carnivores? - Meat, of course.

Today, if you are not a meat eater I would say one of these animals would not find very attractive to share their lives with you and would find nothing of profit being by your side, thus, he or she would probably not offer you his/her back for you to have something warm and soft to caress while watching the fire in a cold winter night, or for your children to have an alive toy and a great games mate, or for your community to use his/her accurate senses to warn you of possible dangers. -- So, put simple, No meat -> No services and No company. That's how the cat/dog would think, hence, he or she would simply leave you and go on his/her own finding his/her food alone in the forest.

They are carnivores. Their bodies have evolved for that. Feeding them exclusively with vegetables is very wrong in my opinion. If you are a vegan and have a carnivore pet that's err, well.. kinda difficult to match, but I would say it's YOU who is a vegan, and that's a choice you make about YOUR life. No ones else's. -- So the pet has got it's own life and I bet dogs and cats are not really willing to follow your steps on veganism, so whether or not you are a vegan please feed them what they naturally eat.

Being a vegan and buying proper food for your dog or cat should not be a problem. And if it is a huge moral issue to you I think you should reconsider having them as pets.

I personally don't have a pet at the moment but my lifestyle choices are only mine and should not be extended to my pet.

Thank you all for showing some interest and commenting on the topic! :D

Hey Andres, thanks for your email.

Right now I'm looking for organic cats food, and even though is expensive, I think is the best option for everybody in this house.

Organic is to me a category for all those things that once had life. Therefore it includes both animal and vegetable kingdoms. What do you mean by organic? I ask because I'm from Spain and I'm not sure on what do you call "organic" there.

If I had a lion at home (which I don't) I wouldn't feed him with lettuce and cucumbers. That's a good summary of what I tried to say before. Though, lions do great without my help in their natural environment.
